Bread of Heaven

The exact numbers escape me, but I think it’s seven and three. That would be seven dogs and three cats, all rescues that live together in the same loving home. But don’t worry, they’re not alone. They allow my friend B., a lovely lady, to live with them. Never mind the fact that she’s allergic to cats. She has a heart for rescue and powerful love for those babies.

While searching a recipe, I detected a similarity to that household and cooking. Just as food gives us life, those precious creatures do the same for her. And she’s done the same for them, providing a new beginning and restored hope. Then, on closer inspection, the relationship between my friend and her furry family definitely resembles bread making. This love story contains all the required ingredients of leavening, seasoning, moisture and a binder.

To B’s life, those animals add the seasonings of sugar, salt, or spice, depending on their individual personality. Each also provides leavening by raising her spirits daily. And the moisture, well, it comes from LOL. No, that’s not what you might think. Here, LOL refers to the licks of love those animals provide often and in generous amounts.

But one major bread component still remains—the flour. That’s where my friend comes in. She’s the main ingredient that binds them all together.  Daily, that collective mixture is then warmed by her love resulting in a most delicious outcome. It’s the bread of heaven. It’s gluten and calorie free. And it’s fresh and new every day, just like God’s grace.

“Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11  (NKJV)
